The Nancy Doyle Clinic
Colonic Hydrotherapy
History
Colonic Hydrotherapy is one of the oldest recorded medical treatments dating back to 1500 BC, so it is over 4000 years old. Eastern mystics and yogists still use internal cleansing, passed down from generations, and it is still part of the Indian Ayurvedic medical practice.
The Colon (large Intestine)
The colon (large intestine) is approximately 1.8 metres (5 ft) long and is much wider than the small intestine, reaching a width of 65 mm (2.5") in places. The colon (large intestine) begins in the lower part of the abdomen on the right side, the first part is known as the caecum, which is continued into the colon. This is sub-divided into the ascending colon, which ascends to the right flank beneath the liver; the transverse colon which crosses the upper part of the abdomen transversely to the left side; and the descending colon, which bends downwards through the left flank into the pelvis, where it becomes the sigmoid colon. The final part is the rectum which passes through the back part of the pelvis to the anus, which acts as a valve, under voluntary control.
Functions
The function of colonic hydrotherapy is to reabsorb digestive juices, water soluble salts and nutrients from the digestion and get rid of waste and whatever remains of the food once it has been through the process of mixing, conversion and absorption carried out in the stomach (small intestine). It is passed into the colon (large intestine) and any remaining nutrients are removed and the result is faeces. However, in many cases this whole process can be disturbed due to stress, environmental issues (e.g. pollution), poor diet, alcohol, medication, smoking and disease. Waste material that remains in the colon from time to time due to the above, i.e. constipation, mucus, parasites and worms, create disharmony in the body’s system. Bowel cancer is prevalent in this country and on the increase. Because of this screening is now carried out for this condition. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulitis and yeast problems all affect the entire body system.
Colonic Assessment
The registered colonic therapist will take a full medical history, both past and present. There will be a full discussion and explanation and expectations about the procedure itself and a consent form is signed for treatment. The procedure will take 30-45 minutes and each step of the procedure is fully explained by a visual chart. The layout of the room and toilet facilities is part of the induction. The patient is given a gown to wear during the procedure, to maintain the patient’s dignity and make the procedure more pleasant.
Procedure
No specific preparation is necessary although large meals and lots of fluid are not advisable. The patient will be positioned on the left side and a rectal examination is carried out. The speculum is introduced into the rectum with the introduction of irrigation (water) at a regulated temperature, into the colon at a gentle low pressure to prevent any danger. After 10 minutes the therapist will request the patient to lie on his/her back, and uses gentle massage across the bowel profile, assisting the elimination of waste and gas pockets. Some herbal infusion may be used during colonic treatment and the practitioner will discuss and advise on any dietary changes required.
Any Dangers
With the skills, training and competence of the practitioner there is virtually no danger with the colonic irrigation procedure. The clinic provides a safe and healthy service, practicing safe standards at all times. Cleaning of the room is of a very high standard and all proctoscopes are disposable in the interest and safety of patients.
Post Colonic
The results can vary, ranging from feeling great, lighter and enjoying a sense of well-being. Patients have commented that it has been the most wonderful experience of their lives and they feel very energetic and refreshed. As soon as the procedure is finished a normal daily routine can be continued. On occasions the colonic may trigger several bowel movements for the next few hours but these will not be uncontrollable or uncomfortable. Sometimes a slight light headedness may appear after a colonic but this settles very quickly.
How Often?
This depends on the individual after full assessment and advice will be given following the consultation and treatment. This may vary from a number of treatments to seasonal treatments. The body will adjust to a healthy cleansing experience. The first colonic will remove some of the waste in the colon and if there has been a long-term problem then subsequent colonics will remove more. How many will depend upon the progress made.
